Neoclassical chest of drawers in rosewood and rosewood. Italy, 18th century
A chest of drawers with two juxtaposed drawers, resting on inverted pyramid feet. Decorated in rosewood and rosewood veneers, the pieces form geometric compositions and feature classically inspired elements distributed across the various surfaces. The top features a circular central panel decorated with a radiant floral motif, flanked by geometric reserves with oblique veins and a classically designed inlaid perimeter frame.
The sides echo the decorative design of the top, with herringbone patterns and a recessed molding, highlighting formal continuity between the different planes of the piece. The circular metal handles feature a smooth central plate and simple grooves.
The piece reveals a refined technical mastery of marquetry work, characteristic of high-end Italian production in the 18th century, in which emphasis is placed on the contrast of exotic woods, the precision in the alignment of grain and the decorative articulation between flat surfaces.
