Italian chest of drawers Lombardy, 18th century

Italian chest of drawers Lombardy, 18th century
Neoclassical chest of drawers veneered in exotic wood, with a rectangular front and three juxtaposed drawers. The structure features straight lines, decorated with classical friezes and the interplay of wood grain forming patterns, typical of eighteenth-century production in northern Italy, particularly the Lombardy region, in the 18th century. The top is decorated with geometric friezes that run along the fronts and sides, topped in the center by a floret, a motif repeated on the drawer lock plates. Metal handles and plates are circular and elliptical, respectively.

Era / Note
A representative piece of Lombard production from the second half of the 18th century, combining structural precision with the graphic richness of inlaid work, in a subtle balance between classical sobriety and decorative sophistication. This commode fits within the neoclassical furniture tradition of Lombardy, known for its rational elegance of form and refined marquetry. The careful use of wood grain, arranged in precise geometric patterns, reflects the Milanese school's sensitivity to classical restraint and architectural clarity inspired by antiquity. 18th-century Lombardy occupied a geographically and culturally strategic position, influenced both by Austrian centers of power (with Milan under Habsburg rule) and the French goût classique. This dual influence gave rise to a distinct decorative language: more restrained than French exuberance, yet more refined than Austrian austerity. The result was a furniture style characterized by strict proportions, flat surfaces, and highly sophisticated use of inlay and marquetry. Neoclassical Lombard furniture frequently employed exotic woods (such as rosewood, plane tree, and jacaranda), often contrasted with lighter fillets (such as acacia, maple, or boxwood), creating surfaces of remarkable decorative and tactile value.
