Era / Note
The D. José style commode, developed in Portugal during the reign of D. José I (1750-1777), is one of the highest expressions of Portuguese Rocaille furniture. It is characterized by its bombé form, the prolific use of exotic woods such as rosewood, and the application of rich bronze mounts. These pieces were symbols of status and opulence, intended to adorn the interiors of the most affluent residences. This example is a testament to the sophistication and influence of European taste (especially French) adapted to the mastery and materials available in Portugal, resulting in a unique and highly prized aesthetic that perfectly integrates into classic environments or serves as a striking focal point in contemporary decor.
