Regency chest of drawers in rosewood with chiseled and gilded bronze montures, France, 18th century
An 18th-century French Regency chest of drawers, richly veneered in Brazilian rosewood and various woods, forming a geometric pattern through the elegant interplay of wood grain, with three large drawers and gilded bronze appliqués. The veined gray stone top, decorated with a recess, follows the undulating movement of the body. The wavy structure, typical of the Regency period (1715–1723), features a front and sides in a slight bombé pattern, with scalloped skirts. Drawer handles and mirrors, corners, legs, and front skirt are richly decorated with chiseled and gilded bronze montures, with asymmetrical rocaille-inspired decorations, including acanthus motifs, scrolls, and floral elements. These appliqués lend refinement to the piece and exemplify the work of Parisian carvers of the early 18th century. The use of rosewood, a highly valuable exotic wood, accentuates the luxurious character of the piece, as well as its original purpose: the interior of an aristocratic or palatial residence.
