Era / Note
Cees Braakman (1917–1995) was one of the most influential Dutch designers of the 20th century, playing a pivotal role in modernizing Dutch furniture design in the post-war period. In 1945, he became head of design at Pastoe (originally known as USM Pastoe, founded in 1913 in Utrecht). Influenced by his travels to the United States and the work of Charles and Ray Eames, Braakman introduced modular thinking, clean lines, and a focus on craftsmanship and functionality. He developed flexible furniture systems — including desks, cabinets, and chairs — characterized by modernist aesthetics and the use of bent plywood and sleek metal frames. His most iconic designs include the DB, DU, and Japanese Series, which show a refined balance between Scandinavian and Japanese influences. Braakman's legacy helped shape Pastoe into one of Europe's most respected modern furniture brands.
