Hans Brattrud (1933–2017) was a Norwegian designer and architect celebrated for his innovative contributions to post-war Scandinavian design. A graduate of the Norwegian School of Architecture, Brattrud gained early recognition for his inventive approach to modern furniture, particularly his use of molded wood in elegant, functional forms. His most iconic creation is the “Scandia” chair, designed in 1957 and later produced by Norwegian manufacturer Hove Møbler from the 1960s onwards. The Scandia series has become a hallmark of Nordic design, noted for its lightweight appearance, ergonomic comfort, and sculptural presence — constructed with curved slats of wood and supported by a sleek sled-style metal base. Hove Møbler played a central role in bringing Brattrud's designs to market, helping elevate Norwegian design on the international stage. While Brattrud later focused on architecture, his furniture remains a key reference in the history of modern Scandinavian design.
