Neoclassical walnut side table, Sweden, 18th century
Neoclassical side table in walnut and other inlaid woods, Sweden, 18th century. Top in painted veneer with a central floral motif, inscribed in a geometric frame, decorated at the corners with a Louis XVI-inspired flower, here reinterpreted in a more stylized manner, in line with Gustavian aesthetics, and surrounded by a pierced metal grate. The waist is decorated with the contrasting play of wood grain, with a classical inlaid frieze simulating architectural archways; corners finished with gilded bronze applications, repeating the same floral motif. The structure rests on inverted pyramidal legs decorated with fine fillets.
Era / Note
Gustavian style: the Swedish interpretation of French neoclassicism (18th century), characterized by clean lines, restrained ornamentation, and the use of light-toned woods, either veneered or painted. Influenced by Louis XVI taste, it reflects the refined and functional elegance associated with the court of Gustav III.
