Set of four Genoese Solomonic columns in polychrome and partially gilded wood. Italy, Genoa, circa 1680–1720
Set of four Genoese Solomonic columns in polychrome and partially gilded wood. Italy, Genoa, circa 1680–1720. Intricately carved and spiraling columns adorned with profuse plant motifs and grape clusters, in polychrome hues of green, red, and ochre, on a finely gilded background. The decorative elements are deeply carved, accentuating the trompe l'oeil effect of the vines wrapping around the shafts. The capitals and bases are also carved with classical and stylized forms, reflecting the rich Baroque aesthetic prevalent in Genoa during this period.
