Born in Portugal in 1878, João Alves de Sá stood out as a painter and watercolorist, specializing in urban and rural landscapes, with a strong focus on areas such as Lisbon, the Douro region, and Vila Nova de Gaia. Appreciated for his sensitive rendering of Portuguese light, atmosphere, and spaces, he often depicted cultural and communal scenes, such as the watercolor “Shepherd with a Flock of Sheep in the Village” (1917) and the 1926 work “Vila Nova de Gaia”. He participated in significant exhibitions, including the 1st Fine Arts Exhibition (1957, National Society of Fine Arts, Lisbon), and in events linked to 1940s Portuguese art and urban culture. Alves de Sá's work is recognized for its realistic and evocative portrayal of everyday life, using watercolor to convey subtle emotion and serene atmospheres.
